Spring cleaning for quilters

I know, with the amount of snow — not to mention rain and freezing rain — lately it doesn’t seem very springlike. But it’s a lot more optimistic than saying January housecleaning.

I’ve identified a couple of thngs that needed cleaning up so I wanted to share with you.

First up was my iron. Yep, I was so proud of the longevity of my iron because I don’t use water in it (I use a spray bottle)…until it left a black speck on my fabric. Hmm, I thought, brushing it away, that looks like carbon. A quick glance at the sole plate revealed that over the years, lint and starch residue had collected in the holes. Euhw. Google suggested a half and half mixture of distilled water and vinegar. I filled and steamed, then steamed some more, ironed an old towel a few times, and even used a toothpick for a few stubborn collections. Here is what the towel looked like when I was done.

The second item was my computer. I have a 5 Tb (terabyte) backup external drive. A check revealed that it hadn’t synced since before Christmas. Yikes, I could have lost most of my sewing photos and patterns that I’ve paid for since the last sync. So I downloaded the newest version of the backup software and got it running again.

In other news, I finished my knitted hat and added a furry pom-pom purchased at the lovely shop Yarn It! in Cobourg. And it’s really hard to take a selfie of the back of one’s head.

What other spring cleaning tasks have you tackled in your crafty life? Let me know!

  1. Hi Lisa! HAHA – yes, it is hard to take a selfie of the back of your head. I think that’s what mirrors are for . . . or a friend. ~giggling~ That hat is very cute and what a nice pom-pom. What a great tip for cleaning your iron! I’m going to try to remember to do that this weekend. ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. I’m glad I made you smile today. Thanks for letting me know 🙂
