Yuma Blog Hop visits Port Hope

For my quilt, I had been musing about an all-neutral quilt, so I went with a silver and gold theme (not just white and grey so it didn’t get too blah and boring) and I am thrilled at the result! I decided that this will be a gift for my in-laws, and chose some of the fabrics to especially match their interests and background–they bicycle everywhere in the summer, my father-in-law loves music and singing, and they are from England originally.

I tried to keep track of how long it took to create my quilt;
Starching, ironing, cutting – 2 hours
Sewing the log cabin triangles and pieced triangles – 5 hours (ironing all the seams open slows everything down)
Piecing the rows – about 20-25 minutes each, total 3 hours
Sewing the rows together – just over an hour

Therefore this is definitely achievable as a weekend retreat quilt, and the visual impact is fabulous. In all honesty, I was lucky to have two solid evenings to work on this quilt, normally my sewing and quilting is in chunks of less than an hour. It might take you less time than me.

When cutting the 6-1/2″ squares out of fat quarters, I actually cut out a 13″ square, then bisected it twice, this leaves the most usable leftover fabric. Another minor change I made is to cut the side triangles by cutting 8 (eight) 8-7/8″ squares (alright, actually I used 9″) in half diagonally, giving me a straight-of-grain edge for the sides of the quilt. I do plan to edge stitch the top and bottom however before quilting. There are 6 leftover pieces — two of the large triangles, and 4 of the 6-1/2″ squares. As of writing of this post, I still need to piece the backing and baste my quilt, but if you come back on Wednesday, I will share cutting directions for a matching pillow (I used my leftover cut pieces) and there will be another giveaway!
